NATIONWIDE – Wednesday, December 5 is the National Day of Mourning to honor former President George H.W. Bush.

The country will continue to remember the 41st president, who passed away at the age of 94. After two days of lying in state, the nation, along with the rest of the world, will soon have the chance to pay their last respects to Bush.

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott declared December 5 an official Day of Mourning. The proclamation encourages Texans to assemble to honor the former president.

State departments will be closed on Wednesday for the Day of Mourning. A small work crew will continue operations at state agencies, offices, and departments.

The public was invited to say goodbye to the former president at the U.S. Capitol until Wednesday morning. A funeral service is now underway at the Washington National Cathedral. President Donald Trump is among the dignitaries attending the event, along with former President Barack Obama.

After the service, Bush will be flown back to Texas. Another memorial will be held in Houston for family and friends. A train will then take the casket to College Station, where he will be buried at his presidential library alongside his wife Barbara Bush and daughter Robin.
