SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — A Webster mother and her 2-month-old child have died as a result of a crash on U.S. 301 in Sumter County.

  • 2-month-old later dies at a hospital
  • Vehicle struck another vehicle 'nearly head on'

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Cassandra French, 24, was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition southbound on U.S. 301 on Sunday night when she traveled off the road and onto the right shoulder.

Troopers say French then overcorrected and traveled back onto the road and into the northbound lane of U.S. 301.

The SUV then collided with 34-year-old Melissa Tobey's 2016 BMW “nearly head on,” FHP said in a news release.

French died at the scene. Her infant son sustained critical injuries and was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, but he died Monday, troopers said.

Tobey was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

All were wearing seat belts, according to FHP.
