ORLANDO, Fla. — Two Central Florida bicyclists were killed in hit-and-run crashes just hours apart over the weekend, adding to the more than 100 fatal bicycle crashes in Florida in 2018 so far this year.

The first deadly hit-and-run happened at the intersection of Clarcona Ocoee and Gilliam roads in Orange County at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The vehicle hit the back of the bicycle, sending the 57-year-old man into a ditch, troopers said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and troopers think the vehicle that hit him has damage to a front reflector and right-side mirror. Troopers haven't released any identities in that crash.

On Monday morning, the FHP said troopers think they've found the pickup involved in the crash.

Lt. Kim Montes said in a news release that the damage to the pickup is consistent with the crash and the missing right-side mirror.

She also said the registered owner of the vehicle refused to give a statement to the FHP.

The second deadly hit-and-run happened the same day, at about 6 p.m., at the intersection of South Clayton Street and Elysium Boulevard in west Orange County, according to FHP.

The driver of a 2009 Nissan pickup truck hit the back of a bicycle. That driver, which troopers say is 38-year-old Melissa Kidd of Mount Dora, failed to stop and only did when her pickup became disabled.

Bicyclist 48-year-old Donald Mosher of Mount Dora, who was not wearing a helmet, died at Florida Hospital Waterman. Charges against Kidd are pending, FHP said.

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, 119 crashes involving bicycles and motor vehicles were fatal, out of 5,901.

This year in Orange County, of more than 433 bicycle crashes, six were fatal, matching last year's numbers for fatalities in the county so far.

According to Florida Department of Transportation, Orange County ranks in top five for bicycle crashes in the state.
