LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bourbon distillers are always looking to up their games. A few of them head to downtown Louisville to take some classes at Moonshine University.

  • Bourbon lovers can learn about spirits at Moonshine University
  • Downtown Louisville course teaches science, history of bourbon
  • Students come from around the world to learn about good bourbon

“First thing in the morning, we start with a flight,” Collin Blake, the director of spirits education, said.

Blake goes through the history and science of bourbon.

Members of his class came from all across the globe. Jeff Lundstrom flew in from Iowa because of how much he loves bourbon.

“This is a subject I want to learn about,” Lundstrom said. “This is the first time I’ve been in a classroom since college.”

The Moonshine University course blends art and science together when it comes to making good bourbon.

“We try to make it as approachable as possible during this class,” Blake said. “There’s microbiology, physics, engineering. There is a lot that goes into this entire endeavor.”

Students are thrown into it, too. Lundstrom and his fellow classmates pour grain into the mill and all the other steps.

“It is neat to see the process of how it is made,” Lundstrom said. “There is a lot of sweat that goes into it,” he added.

Moonshine University has courses besides bourbon. They offer something for distillers and casual fans alike.
