BRADENTON, Florida — It's the not the usual field trip most middle school students would be preparing for in school.

"We're putting in canned foods that we're going to send over to people that were affected by Hurricane Michael," explained eighth-grader Adrian Place.

Almost a dozen students at Lee Middle School on Tuesday stacked crate after crate with non-perishable foods.

The sixth, seventh, and eighth grade members of the Future Business Leaders of America program jumped at the opportunity to help those affected in the Panhandle.

"It means a lot to me, I want to be able to help people that are suffering. That's the whole reason i joined FBLA," Place said.

Next month, the club will take the donations and personally deliver them to some of the hardest hit areas affected by the hurricane.

FBLA advisor Richard Daenell is the one overseeing the trip.

"I believe that my students should know what's happening in the world and not be sheltered from it. It's part of their life," explained Daenell.

In the end, it was the students' decisions to see the destruction first-hand.

All of them are grateful for the opportunity.

"I never would think in a million years that I would get to help people with being just one small person," said eighth-grader Jacob Blankenhorn.

Daenell says the club will continue to collect donations throughout the year as they plan to make multiple trips up to the Panhandle with donations.
