ORLANDO, Fla. — Inside Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, disruptions plagued most of the morning. And people watching at home in Orlando tell Spectrum News 13 they were not happy with the outbursts, or the back-and-forth between Democrats and Republicans.

  • Locals react to Day 1 of Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing
  • Some say they didn't like the partisanship
  • Confirmation hearing expected to last rest of week

“I was really disappointed with it … it turned into a circus almost immediately,” said Randy Ross, Trump 2020 Club Chairman.

Randy Ross is a Republican and firmly believes in Kavanaugh as a good choice for the next Supreme Court Justice. But he said the stalling from the Democrats early on hurt the selection process.

Democrats in the Orlando-area told Spectrum News they do not see it the same way.

“We (should) do this in a timely manner and give people time to look through all the documents, time to make decisions, time to make, say whether this is the right move before we go barreling into something,” said Margaret Melanie Gold, former Democratic candidate of Florida State House District 44.

Gold says she thinks choosing Kavanuagh as the next Supreme Court Justice wouldn’t be taking the country forward, but instead, it would be taking it backwards.

“We can go backwards and try to take all these steps we have gained throughout history and put dampeners on them, and I think that is the choice we are facing,” Gold said.

Kavanaugh’s stance on topics like abortion and gay marriage are sparking concern among the left.

But Randy Ross does not see it that way.

“Are they talking points? Are they things that excite the left and that narrative, that there is fear out there that you need to be concerned about? Of course it sits there. But I don’t believe for a second (those are) the intentions or the result you will see from the confirmation process,” said Ross.

The hearing is expected to last the rest of the week.
