ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings sat down with Ybeth Bruzual to talks about his campaign to become the next Orange County mayor.

The mayoral candidate addressed hot-button issues with Bruzual, such as immigration policy.

When asked if Orange County was destined to be a “sanctuary county,” Demings denied that the county – or Orlando – would ever become one.

“Orange County is not a sanctuary county and nor is the city of Orlando a sanctuary city ... if we through our criminal investigations learn that someone is undocumented, they're here unlawfully, we are required to report that to the federal authorities," Demings said.

But he added that the county is not "going out do immigration enforcement."

Additionally, when Demings was asked what programs he would cut if he had to, he emphasized the need to keep public safety intact.

"I'm not looking to cut public safety. When you grow as a community, one of the fundamental purposes of government really is to keep people safe. We are suffering from this tremendous growth that we have -- number one in the state for population growth, number one for tourism. All of those are great things for us, but it is all about how we manage the growth," Demings said.

Demings is in a three-way non-partisan race for Orange County Mayor against businessman Rob Panepinto and Orange County Commissioner Pete Clarke.

If no one candidate receives 50%+1 of the vote in August, the top two vote-getters go to a runoff on the November ballot.
