The testing of the Rekognition software, which the city calls a pilot program, has been criticized by the American Civil Liberties Union, which says the system could be used to track people without their knowledge or consent.

The program uses existing city-owned cameras to take images of people, compare the faces in the image to a database and identify those people. Amazon says the technology can recognize up to 100 people in a single image.

The goal of the test is to see whether the technology works, the city has said. Orlando Police Chief John Mina said ultimately, the city hopes to "enhance public safety."

But Orlando Police had said the Rekognition software test ended in June.

So why did the city change its mind? We talk with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and get his thoughts.
