SANFORD, Fla. -- The family of a bystander killed in the crossfire of a gunfight in a busy Lake Mary shopping center spoke publicly for the first time in an emotional news conference Thursday.

The family of Daniel Strada has been through gut-wrenching grief since this shooting last weekend that took Strada's life. But they wanted to come forward to talk about their son and brother.

Joe Strada, Daniel Strada’s father, talked about the grief the family is suffering through.

"Every time our door opens up we think it's Daniel coming in with his big smile 'hey what's up guys,'" said Strada.

Last Saturday night Daniel Strada went to the Colonial Grand at Town Park with friends.  Investigators say around two in the morning gunfire broke out between two men in a nearby parking lot.

"He wanted to watch a soccer game, as innocent as can be," said Strada.

Spectrum News 13 learned on Thursday the stray bullet that struck and killed Strada came from several hundred feet away.

"He was over a football field away from a tragic event," said Strada.

Strada's family says the 28-year-old was big into fitness and working out and would not only post videos online, but also personally train with people without asking for any money.

"He would take people and help them get on a fitness program and just work out with them," said Strada. "And it wasn't about anything else other than helping people and that's how he was."

Strada’s family is well known in the community.  They say the outpouring of support has been overwhelming.  And they appreciate lots of prayers from people when Strada was rushed to the hospital.

"The only thing I can tell my family is all those prayers, and God needed him more," said Strada.

Strada's family says Strada will also help people even after his death, donating several organs.

Friends and family have posted plans for a memorial service for Daniel Strada on Facebook.  That service is planned for Monday from 5-9 p.m. at the Lake Mary Events Center.
