ORANGE CITY, Fla. -- A man who worked in Blue Spring State Park and is accused of child porn possession likely produced the material himself, deputies say, and authorities are looking for potential victims.

  • Richard Darby arrested, charged with child porn possession
  • Investigators say Darby produced the child porn himself
  • Detectives are seeking potential victims in Central Florida area

Richard Darby, 43, was arrested at his home on East French Avenue in Orange City on Monday afternoon and has been charged with 20 counts of possessing child pornography. He's being held at the Volusia County Jail on $1 million bond.

Investigators said Darby has worked at Blue Spring State Park as a manager for about 20 years, hired by a third party, Blue Enterprises, to manage concessions and tube rentals.

The investigation began in May, after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children contacted Volusia County Sheriff's detectives about a possible case.

Detectives executed a search warrant at Darby's home on June 29 and said they found photos of children as young as 1 to 3 years old in sexually explicit situations.

After reviewing what they said they gathered at the home, detectives now say Darby made the porn himself and say they have reason to think that there could be child victims in the Central Florida area or beyond.

"We thought it was really, really important that based on everything we've reviewed right now, to get his photo out there, get him in custody and try to identify these other victims," Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

Investigators said Darby may have used social media to track down some of his older victims before bringing them to his home.

"This scumbag should rot in jail for the rest of his life. What he did was steal the innocence of children, and I can't think of another more heinous crime," Chitwood said.

Investigators think Darby lived alone, but he does have a 20-year-old autistic daughter.

Chitwood said detectives think there could be other adults involved, and if so, more charges will be coming.

Anyone who has information on the case or who may have been exploited is urged to call the Sheriff's Office's Child Exploitation Unit at (386) 323-3574.
