PORT ORANGE, Fla. -- An early-morning house fire on Thursday left a female dead in Port Orange, according to the police department.

  • Female body found
  • Identity, age not released

At around 12:30 a.m., the Port Orange Police Department and firefighters from various area departments arrived at 1002 4th St. to find a fire at the back of the house, police stated.

Within 35 minutes, the fire was put out, but during the search, a female body was found in a bedroom, "where the fire appeared to have originated," police stated in a news release.

The female was declared dead at the scene and her age and identity have not been determined.

"There is an autopsy has been performed at the medical examiner office this morning. I believe there will be other tests involved in that process. And they will be releasing, probably, that information later today or later in the week," Port Orange Fire Chief Ken Fustin told Spectrum News 13.

The news release stated that the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Firefighters from Port Orange, Daytona Beach Shores and South Daytona helped put the fire out.
