BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman was attacked and killed by a gator while walking her dog at Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Preserve in South Florida on Friday.

  • Woman killed by gator
  • Residents worried about gators
  • Gator removed by trappers

Authorities said when they arrived on scene they found the dog but not the woman. Evidence suggests that the woman was bit and killed by the 12 foot gator, officials said.

Witnesses said they saw the woman being dragged into the water and that she never came back up.

Some who live in the surrounding area said they are not surprised but they are still terrified by the incident.

"There is plenty of gators in this lake. I'm out here all the time with my kids, my husband. You can see them, they're at least 8-9 foot alligators," said Patricia Ramsaran.

Florida Fish and Wildlife said the gator has been removed from the lake by a trapper and crews are working to recover her body.
