PORT ORANGE, Fla. -- Volusia County authorities say a small, single-engine private plane crashed in Port Orange Tuesday night, where one person died and one was injured.

The crash happened around Taxiway Echo on Spruce Creek Fly-In, a community near a private air strip, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Cessna 140 aircraft crashed into trees around 7:30 p.m.

Deputies say there were two people on board the plane, with one of the two pronounced dead at the scene and the other transported to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach as a trauma alert.

Those living in the neighborhood said the crash made very little noise as it narrowly missed a home and crashed less than a mile behind deep woods in the gated Spruce Creek community.

A nearby resident says a group of people living in the area helped sift through the rubble for the two men on board.

Authorities say the scene is clear of any fuel leaks or other hazards.

FAA says they will be investigating the crash, while the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the cause of the accident.
