SANTA FE, Texas -- Ten people were killed and 10 hurt in a shooting at a Texas high school Friday morning, and explosive devices have been found, according to the governor.

Texas Gov. Greg Abott said confirmed that students were among those killed and hurt at Santa Fe High School in the Houston area.

"We grieve for the victims who lost their lives... and we pray for the families who are suffering," he said Friday afternoon.

The suspect has been identified as 17-year-old student Dimitrios Pagourtzis. He has been charged with capital murder.

A judge denied bond for Pagourtzis in his first appearance in court Friday evening, via closed circuit video from Galveston County Jail. Pagourtzis did not enter a plea at the hearing, and the judge took his application for a court-appointed attorney.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that before 8 a.m. local time, there was an active shooter at the school. A source told CNN that nine students and a teacher were killed.

Gonzalez said Pagourtzis was a student. Another person of interest had been detained.

Abbott said the suspect was taken to the Santa Fe Police Department. He said the shooter had a shotgun and a .38 revolver, which he obtained from his father, who legally owned them. Abbott said investigators have found journals and material on computers and cell phones that indicated the shooter not only wanted to commit the shooting but wanted to commit suicide. Pagourtzis gave himself up instead, Abbott said.

Two law enforcement officers were among the injured, a law enforcement official told CNN. Gonzalez said that a Santa Fe Independent School District officer had been injured, but their condition was unknown.

Explosive devices were found at the high school and surrounding areas, according to Braun and the governor. Molotov coctails were among those devices, according to the governor.

Braun urged people not to touch any suspicious items and to call 911.

Gonzalez said the high school was being searched to make sure students are not still hiding. He didn't say what type of weapon the shooter used.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the scene.

A 16-year-old Santa Fe High sophomore told CNN that she was in geometry class when she heard a fire alarm. When students got outside, MaKenna Evans said a principal told them all to run.

Evans said as she hid behind a building across the street, an aunt called to say there had been a shooting.

Tenth-grader Dakato Shrader described the tense moments during and after the shooting. Shrader told AP she heard alarms at her school and then people yelling to run.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said in a tweet just after 10:30 a.m. CT that it was "no longer an active shooting situation and the injured are being treated."

A spokesman for the University of Texas Medical Branch told CNN that patients from Santa Fe High were en route to their medical facility in Galveston.

Officials with the Santa Fe Independent School District said classes at its schools would be canceled through at least Tuesday, with no plan yet for resuming classes.

Florida officials 'devastated'

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said his heart goes out to the victims' loved ones and thinks something needs to be done.

"Of course, being a parent and a grandparent, it flashes through your mind, 'Here we go -- another set of parents and grandparents kiss their child goodbye, not knowing they would never seen them again,' " Chitwood said. "(They) should be the safest place on Earth, our schools and places of worship, and that's been taken away from us."

Chitwood says he thinks every school must place an armed person on campus.

Meanwhile, Florida Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement: "My wife, Ann, and I are devastated to learn of the tragic school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas today. I just spoke to Texas Governor Greg Abbott and offered any assistance or support they may need in response to this horrific act of violence against innocent students, teachers and law enforcement. As we continue to mourn the loss we experienced in Florida on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, we unfortunately know the enormity of the grief they are experiencing and our hearts are broken over this senseless tragedy."
