ORLANDO, Fla. -- A man found shot at a bank Tuesday morning has died, and Orange County Sheriff's deputies say he was shot by a man he was trying to rob.

  • Deputies say younger man tried to rob older man
  • Older man used his own gun, shot younger man
  • Orange County deputies have identified both men

At about 2:38 a.m. on 4549 Hoffner Ave., a man was at the ATM of a Wells Fargo bank when a younger man tried to rob him by gunpoint, Lt. Kyle Morse said in a news release.

However, the man at the ATM pulled out his own firearm, and the two shot at each other, deputies said. The younger man was struck several times.

The man at the ATM, identified as 64-year-old Frederick Hecker, drove a short distance, called 911 and returned to the bank. Hecker has a valid concealed weapons permit, deputies said.

The younger man, 27-year-old Carlos Medina, was taken by Orange County Fire Resscue to Orlando Regional Medical Center in serious condition. He died hours later.

Earlier, investigators said the younger man was found with severe injuries in the bank's parking lot and claimed he was the one who was robbed.
