MELBOURNE, Fla. — A Brevard County man knows firsthand the pain the Gilchrist community is feeling.

Each time another police officer is shot and killed, Palm Bay's Steve Pill is reminded of his wife, Deputy Barbara Pill.

The veteran officer was gunned down during a traffic stop, shot in cold blood on a Melbourne street back in 2012.

"It never goes away," he said Friday. "Every time this happens it brings up a sore spot in me, it just throws it back in my face what happened to my wife."

Gilchrist County deputies Noel Ramirez and Taylor Lindsey were eating at a Chinese restaurant in Trenton, Florida Thursday, when a gunman shot and killed them inside the restaurant.

Eating a meal while on duty, not even on a call, like Steve Pill's wife.

He says although the loss is devastating, and may never be explained, there is support out there as the deputies' families, friends and colleagues grieve.

"They are not alone," said Steve Pill. "Law enforcement is a big family."

Both slain deputies were described as the "best of the best."

As was Deputy Barbara Pill, a 30-year veteran of the Brevard Sheriff's Office.

Steve Pill says he likely will meet the deputies' families on the annual Florida law enforcement motorcycle ride to Tallahassee.
