OVIEDO, Fla. — A popular UCF student and president of his fraternity was struck and killed while trying to cross a busy intersection near campus on Wednesday night.

  • Reuel Buchanan, 21, struck and killed on Alafaya
  • Troopers said he stepped into path of car
  • Buchanan is a student at UCF, troopers said

The crash happened just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Carrigan Avenue and Alafaya Trail in Seminole County, just a mile north of the UCF campus.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 21-year-old Reuel Buchanan was wearing earbuds when he was either running or jogging.

He made it to the median on Alafaya Trail, and the traffic on the northbound side of the road was stopped at a red light, but the southbound side had a green light. When he tried to run through that moving traffic, he was hit and killed, troopers said.

Troopers said several people saw what happened and told them Buchanan ran out into traffic. The driver of the 2003 Toyota four-door car that struck him did stop.

Buchanan died at the scene.

Several of Buchanan's fraternity brothers posted the sad news of his death on social media, including on a Facebook post on Thursday morning. They're also recalling memories on Twitter with the hashtag #LongLiveRu.

Buchanan was president of UCF's Omega Psi Phi fraternity, they said. One of his fraternity brothers who has graduated but is back in town this week said he had made plans to catch up with Buchanan the night before.

Several UCF students have been struck and killed, and hundreds of people injured, in the area along Alafaya Trail in the past decade.

Because of that, Orange County and UCF partnered to study traffic in the area and plan to spend millions to make safety improvements such as adding lighting and median fences and widening crosswalks.

UCF administration released a statement on Buchanan’s death.

“Our hearts are broken. Reuel was an active, engaged student leader known and loved by many in our UCF family. We extend our love and support to his family and friends,” said Dr. Maribeth Ehasz, Vice President for Student Development and Enrollment Services at UCF.

The crash remains under investigation.
