Former Tampa Chief of Police Jane Castor is moving to the political arena.

Castor officially filed paperwork Thursday so she can run for mayor of Tampa. 

On Facebook, she said: "Our city needs a proven leader who will continue to celebrate our successes, while working with everyone to solve the important challenges that lie ahead."

Castor, 58, retired as Chief of Police in April 2015 after a 31-year career with the Tampa Police Department. 

Other candidates that already joined the race include former Hillsborough County Commissioner Ed Turanchik, Tampa City Council member Harry Cohen, area businessmen Topher Morrison and Michael Hazard.

The Tampa mayoral election is in March 2019.

Current mayor Bob Buckhorn's eight years in office ends in early 2019 due to term limits.
