Officers from across the county are running several miles to raise money for the Special Olympics Florida's state Summer Games.

Earlier this week, Orange County deputies and officers from the Orlando Police Department, including Chief John Mina, ran 3 miles as part of their fundraising efforts.

"Special Olympics is all about acceptance, inclusion, and our athletes with intellectual disabilities, it gives them the opportunity to participate in sport, and sport is so great. It builds comradery and confidence," Mina said Tuesday.

The money raised through the Torch Run, along with other events throughout the year, helps pay for equipment, uniforms and the venues for the Special Olympics athletes.

The Summer Games will be held May 18-19 at ESPN Wide World of Sports at Disney World.
