On Monday, the state released several hours of police body camera video and other evidence in the Allen Cashe case, the man accused of shooting six people in Sanford earlier this year. The shooting left a mother and her young son dead.

  • Police body camera video shows Cashe was combative in police cruiser
  • Cashe told police that Latina Herring had his car key
  • Cashe is accused of shooting six people, killing Herring and her son

The evidence shows police arresting Allen Cashe and interviewing him for nearly two hours back at the police station.

After a violent morning in Sanford last March, police officers spotted Allen Cashe at a basketball court. They asked him to drop a rifle, which he did.

Cashe complied with officer commands during his arrest, but body cam video shows him becoming combative while in the back of a police cruiser. One officer is heard saying Cashe told her he wished he would’ve shot at officers when he had the chance.

Cashe is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Latina Herring, and her eight-year-old son Branden Christian. Cashe admits to storming into Herring’s home off Hayes Drive in Sanford, where investigators say he also shot Herring’s father and seven-year-old son. Police say Cashe then shot two people he thought were potential witnesses -- a teenage girl at her bus stop and a man nearby.

Police had responded earlier in the morning to a fight between Cashe and Herring. Herring told police Cashe had her house key. In an interview with police after his arrest, Cashe says Herring had his car key.

“All I wanted what was mine,” said Cashe. "I gave her what was hers and I didn’t get what was mine.”

“I didn’t want to go that far," he continued. "I was calm all night. All I wanted to do was to get up and go to work. I turned my whole life around.”

When the investigator repeatedly asked Cashe why he shot Herring, her father, her kids or the other bystanders, he didn’t answer. At one point while talking to an investigator, Cashe breaks down emotionally and begins crying.

“This all could’ve been avoided,” said Cashe.

Cashe is facing multiple counts of pre-meditated, and attempted pre-meditated murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

All of the evidence released Monday by the state attorney’s office is part of his ongoing court case.
