The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating after a Volusia County Deputy shot and killed a shotgun-wielding man Thursday night in Deltona.

The sheriff’s office says a woman called 911, reporting her 58-year-old husband Daniel A. Donarski was acting violently, punching holes into walls, and threatening to burn down their home on 716 Teather Ave.

When two deputies arrived on the scene, they approached the porch of the home.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said he viewed the body camera video the deputies were wearing.

The two deputies called for the man inside to come out, and investigators claimed the man started to use profanity.

When Donarski did come out of the house, he pointed a shotgun at the deputies, according to Chitwood.

One of the deputies whisked the wife out of harm’s way, while the other deputy, identified as 25-year-old Shawn Adkins, opened fire, killing the man.

“If you’ve ever heard a shotgun rack, it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up, and you hear it racking and within a matter of seconds you hear ‘drop the gun’ and you hear all hell just breaks loose. And unfortunately the gentleman is dead, but deputies had to do what they had to do,” said Chitwood.

The Donarski was being weaned off his medications and had been drinking heavily, the sheriff said.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid leave, which is normal protocol. Adkins was hired by the county on October 2015.
