Suicide is a major public health concern, resulting in more than 40,000 people dying each year in the U.S.

It's the 10th leading cause of death in the country, and although there are risk factors — there's also hope.

Risk factors include depression, a prior suicide attempt and a family history of suicide or violence, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders.

NIMH has a suicide prevention hotline, 1-800-273-TALK (8255), manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All calls are confidential. Go to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline website for more information. You can also chat with someone online 24/7 at the Lifeline Crisis Chat.
