A 14-year-old girl who was stabbed while walking to school Friday morning stabbed herself, Seminole County Sheriff's deputies now say.

  • 14-year-old girl stabbed in abdomen on way to school
  • Deputies said later in the day that she made up story
  • She was treated for 'superficial' abdomen wound
  • She won't be charged but will get counseling

She suffered stab wounds in her abdomen that the Sheriff's Office earlier described as superficial and was treated at a hospital.

At about 6 a.m., the 14-year-old student was walking to her bus stop with ear buds in her ears near Sterling Park Elementary School when she said she was attacked by an unknown male, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said. The male was described as a tall black or Hispanic person.

“We take these things very seriously, and these are incredibly serious allegations that this victim made," Cannaday said. "We’re just grateful that we didn’t make contact with anybody that maybe matched the description that the victim gave and put them in an uncomfortable position."

The girl does not attend the elementary school, district officials said.

She will not get in legal trouble for falsely reporting the attack but will get counseling, deputies said.
