The signs of fall are back.

"The whole farm is half Orange County and half Lake County,” said Haley Veilleux with the Long and Scott Farms while sitting in a giant orange Adirondack chair, flanked by scarecrows.

The farm’s decorative bathtub's again lined with gourds. Fresh onions are in the bin. And the tomatoes are packed.

Yet, one thing is missing.

"We lost first three plantings due to the hurricane,” Haley said about Irma’s wrath.

Right now, there’s only three ears of corn on display.  That's right.  Only three ears of Zellwood Sweet Corn.

Haley believes the sweet corn needs another week and a half.

"It will be here. Just towards mid-October,” she estimated.

"They were blown down to the west. And then turned around to the north. And then spun them all around and they took a beating to the root system,” said Hank D. Scott III, the long time sweet corn farmer.

But just behind the farm market and cafe awaits a field of gold and green that isn't meant to eat. Rather, it's meant to play in.

Kids can rejoice.  The Long and Scott Farms six-acre corn maze is set to open this weekend as planned.

Hank parked his farm trucks along the edge of the maze to protect it from Irma’s winds blowing across the flatlands of Orange County.

"You can get lost,” Haley said.

This year's maze design honors first responders. Cut into the corn a fire truck and a police car.

Hank offers a little perspective.

"It's not about the corn, it's about the adventure,” he said with a grin.  "It's not a real expensive day, but it's a lot of fun."

Know Before You Go:
The Long and Scott Farm is open throughout the autumn season. Visit their web site here for ticket information and opening times. Closed toed shoes and a bottle of water are smart to have when entering the maze.
