A traffic stop late Monday night turned into a shootout involving Volusia County deputies that left a Virginia man dead and a pregnant woman in the hospital.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said the deputies, 51-year-old William Kretzer and 35-year-old Daniel Sweeley, stopped a truck for a faulty tail light around 11:30 p.m. on State Road 40 near Barberville.

Investigators said 19-year-old Shannon Murphy was behind the wheel, and 26-year-old Timothy Wagner was her passenger. Both were from Marion, Virginia.

According to sheriff's office spokesman Gary Davidson, Deputy Sweeley was talking to Murphy when Wagner pulled out a gun and opened fire on the deputies.

Both officers fired back, killing Wagner and injuring Murphy on her shoulder. Murphy was flown to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

"They did what was right," Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said of his deputies. "This individual tried to kill my officers, and basically he got what he deserved by trying to kill these law enforcement officers."

Deputies said the truck Murphy was driving, a 2006 GMC, was reported stolen from a dealership in Jackson County, on the Florida Panhandle.

The medical examiner was scheduled to conduct an autopsy Tuesday morning on Wagner.

The sheriff's office said Murphy has been cooperating with the investigation while she recovers. Charges are pending.

Kretzer was hired in 2002, and Sweeley in 2011. The sheriff's office said both deputies were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates.
