A Sunday night shootout in Orange County ended with a suspect being killed and two deputies suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies responded around 5:18 p.m. to the area of the Publix located at 4501 Hoffner Ave., in Orange County, after a woman called 911 because she had a domestic violence injunction against her boyfriend. Deputies said the woman claimed the man wanted to meet her at the grocery store.

About six deputies responded to the scene, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said.

Just after the deputies arrived, a man fired rounds from a handgun at patrol cars. Bullets went through the rear windows of one of the deputies' patrol cruisers and missed "deputies by inches," Demings said.

The deputies suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office. One of the deputies was brought to Orlando Regional Medical Center with a leg injury. The deputy got stitches and was released.

A second deputy was injured by glass on the side of his forehead. He was treated at the scene, officials said.

Deputies returned fire, killing the man. The suspect's identity hasn't been released, but the Sheriff's Ofifce said he's 46 years old.

"The individual who was shot and killed has fancied himself as a sovereign citizen, if you will," Demings said.

Arron Sanders, who witnessed the shooting, said: "It just sounded like an all-out gun battle."

About two dozen shots were fired, officials said.

"It was going off, it was, like, pop-pop-pop-pop," said Dan Springen, who was inside the Publix when gunfire broke out. "Not a couple seconds later ... there were people running into Publix scared, and that's when I knew it was gunshots."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called in to investigate the shooting. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol.

"Law enforcement is programmed to win," Demings said. "It's a sad day when anybody has to die, but law enforcement officers are programmed to win."
