Fresh off the heels of a political scandal in his own state, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is in Central Florida campaigning for Gov. Rick Scott.
Many security guards were on hand Saturday, making sure only donors get in to see Christie on his first stop since being embroiled in a scandal in his home state.
Scott decided to carry on with the fundraising events, hoping the New Jersey governor can drum up a lot of money for his re-election campaign.
Christie has been criticized since last week’s accusations his staff caused a politically motivated traffic backup on the George Washington Bridge. He denies any knowledge of the plan.
Gov. Scott said Christie did the right thing by apologizing to residents.
We were unable to speak with the governors as the event was closed to the media.
However, Republican Rep. John Mica said it was packed.
"The governor handled the situation, I thought very well, and his leadership has been outstanding,” Mica said. “Gov. Scott also has proven to be one of the most responsible effective governors we have in the nation."
Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was sent to Orlando to rebuke the Republican governors.
"It's not every day that we have a governor visit Florida, whose scandals burn so brightly that they outshine even those of our own scandal plagued Gov. Rick Scott," Wasserman Schultz said.
Some protestors held up signs, including one that read “The traffic on I4 is bad enough, go away."
Wasserman Schultz said the DNC will be following Christie's every move.
Christie was recently named the new chair of the Republican Governor's Association and is expected to crisscross the country, campaigning for Republican governors this election year.
The pair will head to Fort Lauderdale this afternoon, with another fundraiser Sunday in North Palm Beach.
