Police departments across Central Florida are taking part in the 2013 Kicks 4 Guns program today to get guns off the street.
Anyone turning in a gun will receive a $50 gift card from Wal-Mart, Target or BP gas.
The annual event is sponsored and organized by Real Radio 104.1's Monsters in the Morning. Organizers said the event has gotten thousands of guns off the streets that might have otherwise ended up in the hands of dangerous criminals.
The event also demonstrates how community partnerships working with law enforcement can help reduced violent crime and keep our communities safe, organizers said.
Last year alone, more than 1,300 guns were turned in, and 36 of those turned out to be illegal.
Orlando Police will be collecting guns at the Dr. Smith Neighborhood Center and said the location serves as a reminder to the dangers illegal guns can cause. “It’s just mere coincidence that a few blocks away from where we are getting these guns tomorrow one of our officers was shot, its mere coincidence but an example of getting some of these guns off the streets so they don’t end up in the hands of dangerous criminals,” said Sgt. Jim Young from the Orlando Police Department.
Police ask anyone bringing a gun to put it in their trunk. The collections are being done as a drive through service. You just pull up and they remove the gun or guns from your trunk and give you a $50 gift card.
