MIAMI (AP) — Two women have taken over as new U.S. attorneys to oversee federal cases in districts covering much of Florida.
Ariana Fajardo Orshan took the oath of office Tuesday to be the top prosecutor in the Southern District, while Maria Chapa Lopez was sworn in earlier this month for the Middle District. They were both appointed by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate.
Fajardo Orshan was appointed as a Miami-Dade circuit judge in 2012 by Gov. Rick Scott, most recently handling family matters. She previously was a Miami-Dade prosecutor. The Southern District runs from Vero Beach to Key West.
Chapa Lopez worked as a federal prosecutor, a U.S. Embassy attache in Mexico City and was a lieutenant colonel in the Army's Judge Advocate General Corps. The Middle District stretches from Jacksonville to Naples.
