For five innings, Eustis looked like the veteran state softball team. Not first timers playing in the school's first state championship.

But in the sixth, two-time defending state champs Coral Springs Charter scored two runs to come from behind to win the Class 5A state championship, 2-1.

The pitchers took on starring roles in the title matchup. Sophomore Delaney Heaberlin for Eustis and Coral Springs Charter senior Ally Muraskin with five strikeouts, including the final out.

Eustis struck first.

In the bottom of the first, Jaycie Michael's shot to center field threatened to put Eustis' first points on the board, but lead runner Tori Rodebaugh was tagged out at home. Next batter, Serieh Brokenborough's grounder to the short stop appeared to be an easy out, but a fielding error resulted in Michael crossing home plate for Eustis' first run.

The Panthers tried to add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Lexi Rodriguez's two-out double to left field threatened to extend the lead, but Coral Springs came through with a strikeout to end inning.

Eustis could have used the insurance runs. Coral Springs tied the game in the top of the sixth. With runners on first and third and one out, Lindsey Garcia drove in the tying run with an RBI infield bunt.

Coral Springs took the lead two batters later when Gianna Boccagno's single to left field sent Shannon Doherty across the plate.

The Panthers retired three-straight batters in the top of the seventh to set up a rally attempt. Brokenborough was injured on the final out when she collided with the dugout gate trying to catch a foul ball.

Coral Springs Charter followed suit in the bottom of the seventh by retiring all three Eustis batters.
