The Wekiva Mustangs continued their record-breaking season sealing up a date in the 9A Championship game by defeating class-favorite South Miami Friday night at the Lakeland Center, 73-59.

The score was tied at 28 at the half before the Mustangs went on a 12-2, using a full-court press to open up the third quarter.

Wekiva (26-5) pushed the lead to 11 points heading into the final eight minutes.

That’s whent senior forward Paul Reed went to work. The DePaul University signee powered in an and-one play at the 4:06 mark that kept South Miami at bay with four minutes to go, 63-55.

The team as a whole impressively made 27-of-29 free throws in their debut at the Lakeland Center.

Reed finished the night with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Jeremy Johnson (12 points, 6 rebounds) Keon Morris (11 points) and Tyrone Perry (10 points) all chipped in for the Mustangs as the team prepares to make its first state championship appearance Saturday night.

Wekiva will face the winner of Osceola and Wellington in the 9A Title game.​
