Lyman hurdler Tyreek Thyme is hitting his stride in his senior season. When it comes to the track, one could call Tyreek a late bloomer, only starting the sport in his sophomore year.

“I just got into it. At first I was like ‘Nah, I can’t do this’” said Tyreek. “But look at me now.”

It’s his length and athleticism that makes Tyreek a natural. Head Track & Field Coach Fred Fink has been coaching at Lyman for over 30 years. “You were able to identify early on that he was going to be a really good athlete,” said Fink. “He has got a unique combination of talent and he has got a strong work ethic.”

From newbie on the track to a key member of Lyman’s track and field team, Thyme surprised everyone last season, helping lead the Lyman Greyhounds to the 4A State Championship.

“Without him we wouldn’t have won the state championship,” said Fink. “He went into both races in the hurdles, not even seeded to score and he finished 3rd in both hurdles. That actually caused us to win the state championship by 1 point.”

Tyreek won’t have that anonymity this go-round. A favorite to reach the podium again, Thyme is impressing with his times already. Last week at the Greyhound Invitational, he broke a school record in the 110meter hurdles, a 14.09 run.

“I love putting in work. Really, it’s a lot of work and I really enjoy it, it’s fun,” said Thyme. “I may fall here and there but I always pick it up. It’s tough but not everything in life is easy.”

From 3rd last season, to goals of being top of the podium this season.
