Chatarius Atwell had over 250 offensive yards and two touchdowns to lead Miami Northwestern to a 21-16 win against Armwood in the Class 6A state championship game at Camping World Stadium on Friday.

Armwood (14-1) had a final possession at their 39-yard-line but failed to get a first down.

Northwestern (12-2) won its first state championship since 2007. The Bulls had a 303-150 advantage in total yards.

The Hawks have been in the state championship game six of the past eight years but have lost on the field five times and had a 2011 Class 6A championship vacated.

Atwell broke a 9-9 tie with 3:41 in the third quarter when he scored on a 51-yard keeper to give Northwestern a 15-9 lead. The Bulls increased their lead to 21-9 on their next drive when Atwell connected with Kiaryn Davis on a 46-yard touchdown pass.

Armwood rallied back behind the legs of quarterback Devin Black. While Black struggled to get anything going in the passing game he rushed for 63 yards and scored on a 11-yard scramble to make the score 21-16 with 6:46 remaining.

Northwestern was able to kill five minutes off the clock with their next drive and forced the Hawks to use all three timeouts. Armwood's defense stopped Northwestern on a fourth-and-one at the Hawks 39 to gain possession.

Black, however, misfired on three passes including a fourth-and-seven that effectively ended the game.

Armwood took a 9-0 lead in the first quarter with a safety off a Northwestern muffed punt and a five-yard touchdown pass from Black to Warren Thompson.

Northwestern flipped the script in the second quarter with their own safety on an Armwood muffed punt and a touchdown on a 12-yard run by Davonne Kendrick.

Atwell had 106 rushing yards and a touchdown. He was 10-of-18 passing for 152 yards and a touchdown.

Black was 6-of-19 for 53 yards and a touchdown. Brian Snead rushed for 49 yards on 19 carries.
