The previously unbeaten New Smyrna Beach Barracudas could not defend their home court as they lost a highly competitive match to their Volusia County rivals Spruce Creek in straight sets 25-20, 25-23, 31-29 in non-district play on the campus of New Smyrna Beach.

The match was seen live on Spectrum Sports.

The Hawks have now defeated the Barracudas four straight times and have won 9 of the last 11 meetings.

USF commit Lindsey Pliapol led the Hawks with 20 kills, and now has 937 kills in her stellar 4-year career at Spruce Creek.  Pliapol, who only had 4 kills in the first set, was selected at the Spectrum Sports Player of the Game.

Tampa commit Sara Louma led New Smyrna Beach with a game- high 20 kills while fellow Tampa commit Kamari Potter added 6 kills in the loss.

The Barracudas have only lost 5 sets all season and now have a record of 18-1.

Spruce Creek head coach Cara Swayze earned her 501st career win in her 26th season with the Hawks and saw her team fight through adversity in the wild 31-29 third set.

Barracudas head coach Laura Smith, who was a 2-time All-American at UCF, now has a record of 39-4 in her two seasons leading New Smyrna Beach.

Spruce Creek (16-6) will travel to play at DeLand on Wednesday, while New Smyrna Beach travels to College Park in Orlando to play in the Bishop Moore Invitational on Saturday.
