West Orange’s Austin Burton hasn’t even lived in the Sunshine State for a full year, but he is already turning heads on the football field.

The senior quarterback threw 21 of 28 for 233 yards and three touchdowns against Osceola in the Kickoff Classic, while playing in only three quarters.

“Yea, I expected it,” said Warriors Head Coach Bob Head when asked whether he expected such stats. “He showed us that in the spring, and showed us that this summer with his work ethic. In fall camp, he has been very explosive and made some big plays. Just when you think he can’t make that throw, he can.”

Burton transferred in to West Orange and Coach Head’s team in the spring, moving to Orlando from Boston to be able to play against better competition in his final high school season.

“It was a quick transition because I had to learn a whole new offense,” said Burton.  “I had to work with receivers that are much faster than I have known previous, so the whole game is much faster down here. Just learning those little nodes and picking it up, I had a quick transition.”

The move is already paying off with Austin picking up additional college interest over the summer. Burton recently changed his commitment from Boston College to UCLA. But before he becomes a Bruin, he has one year at West Orange.

“It’ll be fun once we get a full game in, see how much damage we can do.”
