Scoring has always come easy for Nyameye Adom, but that wasn’t always his priority until last week against Eustis.

“I feel like I had realized that before but I had never really done it,” Adom said. “I never really knew how to do it because I’m an unselfish player I feel, and I just always want to share the ball and I never realized that me scoring the ball is going to open up even more opportunities for my teammates.”

Adom dropped 29 points and added 10 rebounds in a 68-51 win over Eustis in the Metro vs Florida Challenge on Saturday. Earlier in the week he scored 15 to help the Cougars defeat Freedom. Filling up the stat sheet with points is certainly welcomed by first year head coach Eddie Johnson.

“The thing I’ve been trying to tell him is be very aggressive,” Johnson said. “So starting off the season I think he was a little uncomfortable being that aggressive, and then I think Saturday you just saw him come out of his shell and decide to be the player he’s always been, just now people are starting to see it.”

After two straight seasons of finishing with a record below .500 the 6-foot guard is ready to do whatever it takes to lead University to districts and beyond.

“I probably have to stay consistent the whole year,” Adom said. “I need to keep putting up those type of numbers. My teammates get more confident so we can grow together and move along together.”

“He takes a lot of the focus off of our other teammates,” Johnson said. “So they can go and get to spots that they couldn’t get to before when he was more passive. So really what’s going to happen is I think he’ll continue to score, but you’ll see other players also play well and for the team that means we’ll win games we’re supposed to win.”
