October is breast cancer awareness month and Bright House Sports Network is doing its part to raise awareness.  All month we will feature inspiring stories.

We continue our coverage with Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ wide receiver Louis Murphy, Jr., whose life was personally touched by breast cancer.

Louis Murphy, Jr. has battled injuries the last two seasons.  He got his will to fight from his mother, Filomena Murphy, who courageously battled breast cancer.  Murphy, Jr. is speaking out on breast cancer awareness for the first time since losing his mother in 2008, and says his work with the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa is his way of dealing with his pain and helping others deal with theirs.

“I really want to start an initiative with the Moffitt Center to help kids and families that are battling breast cancer.  I want to be able to have a program through my non-profit, 1st Downs for Life, and partner with Moffitt to encourage and help families through the long-term in battling this disease.”

Mrs. Murphy dedicated her life to helping children.  So, her son saw the chance to speak with Junior Bucs for the “Moffitt Healthy Kidz Goes Pink” campaign as a chance to honor his mother and educate kids about breast cancer.

“My mother is a woman that loved kids, loved the community.  She always gave of her time.  To honor her is to do the same thing.  With the platform I'm given, I want to help kids and encourage them, even if it's just a simple conversation with them.”

Murphy has had success on the field, but said his mom's passing made him more aware of how important it is to give back when he is off the field.

“For the dash that is between those dates, your sunrise and sunset, whatever you do with that time should have an impact on your life and provide a service to the community.”
