Wekiva and Faith Christian Academy opened the Showdown in O-Town with wins Saturday afternoon to tipoff the private vs. public high school boys basketball event at Orlando Christian Prep.

Willie Carmichael scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead No. 6 Wekiva (14-3) to a 77-49 win over Windermere Prep, while Faith Christian’s Gregg Supas scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the Lions (13-3) knock off Hagerty 54-51.

Bright House Sports Network will broadcast the final three games tonight on Channel 47 (1147 HD), beginning with No. 1 OCP vs. No. 12 Dr. Phillips at 5:05 p.m.

No. 5 Lake Highland Prep takes on Boone at 7:05 p.m. followed by No. 13 The First Academy vs. No. 9 Oviedo at 9:05 p.m. No. 4 Evans also took part in the showdown, facing off with defending Class 3A state champion Jacksonville Providence.

Wekiva used runs of 11-0 in the second quarter and 12-1 in the third to distance itself from Windermere after a tight opening period.

Free throws by Windermere’s Parker Davis tied the game at 15-all at the end of the first quarter, but with less than seven minutes to play in the first half Je’Quan DeLugo took a feed down low and converted for a bucket to begin a run that proved too much to overcome.

Carmichael scored seven points in the second quarter to put the Mustangs in front 29-18 with just three minutes remaining before the break.

A 3-pointer from Michael Stones early in the third got Windermere Prep within 37-27, but the Lakers got no closer the rest of the way as they struggled to find open looks at the basket.

Windermere entered the game averaging 72 points per game.

“Everything we do starts for us on the defensive end,” Wekiva coach Scott Williamson said. “We knew they were going to be a tremendous challenge, and what happened to us in the first quarter was that our transition defense wasn’t very good.”

Once Wekiva was able to effectively get back down the floor after quickly putting up points on the other end, there was little the Lakers could do to counter what became one of the better all-around efforts this season for the Mustangs.

Ruben Monroe scored 15 points and pulled down 7 rebounds and Nathan Powell finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds for Wekiva, who have won nine of their last 10 games.

Davis led Windermere Prep with 15 points. Quinton Forrest scored 13 and David Ndiaye blocked five shots.

Faith Christian was unable to finish off defending Class 8A champion Hagerty until late in the fourth quarter of its matchup despite leading for much of the way.

The Huskies tied the game at 32-all with three minutes left in the third – after trailing by double digits – off a 3-pointer by Denzel Mahoney. Hagerty would take its first lead on two free throws by Eric Castaneda to close out the period.

But the Huskies went more than six minutes without making a shot from the field before Castaneda tied the game at 37-37 on shot from behind the arc with less than six minutes remaining.

Supas ended the threat when he wiped away a 42-39 Hagerty advantage by scoring six in a row to put Faith in front for good.

“He’s been so solid for us,” Faith Christian coach Tony Medina said of Supas. “He does the little things that we know we can rely on him for. He’s our horse, he’s our go-to guy and he handles it well.”

Faith Christian appeared to be in good position for an easy win as they ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 20-8 lead. But the Huskies, who had trouble shooting from the field much of the game, outscored the Lions 15-8 over the ensuing eight minutes to cut the deficit to 28-23 at the break.

Faith got 10 points each from Elijah Adedoyin and Keontay Maxwell. Castaneda led Hagerty with 20 points while Mahoney added 15.
