The Lake Howell softball team entered Thursday's 7A District 4 contest with plenty of early season accolades.

An undefeated record, a national ranking and the number one spot in the latest Bright House Sports Network softball poll.

But those accomplishments meant nothing to co-district leader Winter Springs.

Senior Elizabeth Birle tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing only three hits, to shut down the Silver Hawks, 5-0, on the Subway Restaurants Bright House Sports Network Game of the Week.

Birle also popped a 2-run homerun as part of a 3-run 3rd inning for Winter Springs.

Senior Brittany Garcia put the Bears on the board in the 1st inning with an RBI triple. Then it was Birle's power in the 3rd that gave Winter Springs a 4-0 lead that they would not relinquish.

On the mound, it was the first shutout of the season for Birle, who improves to 4-4 on the year.

Lake Howell falls to 9-1, 2-1 on the year, while the Bears improve to 7-4, 3-0 to take a one game lead in the district standings.
