With 17 goals scored in the last five games, Bishop Moore senior David Shafer is wearing golden boots for the gold and black this season. The striker's scoring touch has been a big part of the Hornets' 12-1 start.

“I really think that we’re going off on the right foot, we’re doing really well,"explains Shafer. "The team as a whole is playing well. The team is contributing their part. So I’m just really happy with the way it’s going."

“He’s taken the success he got last year, and has become the leader on the front line," says Hornets head coach Tom Hage. "The team is feeding him well and the team is just on a good scoring streak right now”

“My teammates try to get me the ball, and I just try to do my best to put it in the back of the net. But it’s all about the service this season. The service has been perfect so I can’t complain!” exclaims Shafer.

Shafer is not just a scorer, David has also adjusted to his role as one of Bishop Moore’s captains, much like his older brother Phil Shafer, a former 4-year starter for the Hornets, who is now playing soccer in college.

”He’s really helped me out since my freshman year, even before that he was like my idol growing up.”

Two of his uncles played soccer professionally, and David has the ability to take the next step.

“I’m hoping he’s following that route," says Hage. "Obviously everybody will be as competitive and as strong and as soccer savvy as he is, so he’ll have to step up his game. But he improved over the summer, as long as he keeps improving, I think he can play.”
