Berkeley Prep sweeps 1A Region 2

The 1A Region 2 competition took place Saturday morning at the Northshore Pool in St. Petersburg with a Berkeley Prep sweep.

Buccaneer junior Elle Chancey secured mega points with her two regional titles in the 50 and 100 Free.

But not far behind was Tampa Prep who finished runner-up in girls and boys.

Though the Terrapin girls won all three relays, their lack of depth aided their inability to pass the Buccaneers in the team standings.

"I think it is a good thing for the team," said Head Coach Jason Bowes. "We can use this over the next week to build our strength going into the main show."

Tampa Prep qualified six girls for states - led by Hannah Fredlake in the 200 and Free and Savannah Savitt in the 200 IM and 100 Breast.

On the boys side for the Terrapin's, senior Rasmus Skjaerpe, who committed to Arizona State last month, cruised to victory in both his events. Skjaerpe got out to a strong start in the 200 IM and then cruised through his breaststroke and backstroke to secure the win.

Other area top swims: Clearwater Central Catholic's (CCC) Emma Spilman finished second in the 200 IM and was a regional champion in the 100 Fly; CCC freshman Matthew Hirschberger was a regional champion in the 500 Free and finished third in the 200 Free; Shorecrest's John Farese was second in the 100 Back and was a regional champion in the 100 Free; Shorecrest's Joshua Chen finished second in the 200 IM and was regional champion in the 100 Breast.

Swimmers will now turn their attention to the final stop in the post season, the State Championships on Friday at the Sailfish Splash Park in Stuart.
