Walt Disney World is set to welcome baby tigers to its Animal Kingdom Park next month.

  • Tiger cubs coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom
  • Officials say they expect the cubs to be born in August
  • Sumatran tigers are critically endangered

The expectant mother and father-to-be are Sohni and Malosi.  According to Disney, the tiger cubs should be born sometime in August, which isn’t that far away.

Sohni, the female, was introduced at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2014; Malosi, the male, in 2015. Both are part of the Maharajah Jungle Trek, the self-guided walking tour in the park’s Asia area.

The Disney Conservation Fund released the following statement with the announcement:

“Disney is involved in efforts to save critically endangered Sumatran tigers. To date, the Conservation Fund (DCF) has provided nearly $2.5 million to protect tigers and their habitats.”

Sumatran tigers are the smallest sub-species of tiger and are found only on the island of Indonesia. They are critically endangered, with as few as 500 left in the wild.

Sohni and Malosi are part of conservation efforts to ensure the genetic viability of the tigers, with the hopes of reintroducing the animals into the wild.
