An all-new Star Wars trilogy is coming to a galaxy far, far away, Lucasfilm said Thursday.

  • New Star Wars trilogy to be produced, Lucasfilm says
  • Series of movies will be separate from Skywalker saga
  • Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge lands being built at Disney parks

Rian Johnson, the writer and director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is being tapped to create the trilogy, the film studio announced on its website.

The new series of films will be separate from the Skywalker saga and will feature original characters "from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored," the website said.

"We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, on StarWars.com. "... Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

No release dates have been set for the new trilogy.

Star Wars-themed lands are being constructed at both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open in Anaheim in 2019 and is thought to be opening in late 2019 at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Disney World. A luxury Star Wars-themed hotel is also coming to Disney World, company officials said at this year's D23 Expo.
