The City of Sanford just rolled out a new trolley that will take passengers to several stops in the city.

Sanford has offered shuttle rides from the Amtrak station into downtown before, but the new trolley will stop at the SunRail station, the Sanford Welcome Center and several other places in the heart of the city’s downtown district.

David Love and his wife Malisa traveled from the Tampa area to Sanford to catch the Amtrak auto train to Virginia. They had a couple of hours, so they took the new trolley into downtown.

“You don’t have to sit there all those hours and wait," said Love. "It gives you something to do, helps kill time and we can go get a bite to eat."

For years, business owners and Sanford city leaders have pushed for ways to attract people from I-4, Amtrak and SunRail into downtown.

"The trolley is very nice, because they come often and bring in more people to our business, and we are doing more business now,” said Delia Campos, owner of BFF by My Beach Style, a downtown Sanford retail store.

The trolley holds up to 45 people at a time and is accessible to people with disabilities. It runs Mondays through Saturdays.

For the Loves, it was their first time in Sanford, but likely not the last.

“We’ll make the best of it in the little time we’re here, but most likely we’ll be back,” said Love.

Sanford city officials officially unveiled the trolley to the public at the city’s “Alive After Five” event Thursday night. More information, including a schedule and list of stops, visit sanfordfl.gov.
