Work on the I-4 Ultimate project has been temporarily suspended after a worker was killed on the job on Thursday morning.

SGL subcontractor Shelby Erectors, the lead contractor on the I-4 Ultimate project, confirmed that its worker 56-year-old Michael Tolman of Orlando died shortly after he was struck by a rebar forming a "cap cage" near the westbound I-4 on-ramp at South Street.

Tolman was critically injured when the reinforced steel fell on him. He was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he died.

This is the third death directly related to the 21-mile construction project. In February 2016, Marvin Franklin, 34, was killed when he was backed over by a dump truck.

Another man, Curtis Popkey, was killed near the Cranes Roost in Altamonte Springs later that same year in December.

Construction officials are working to find out how the latest accident occurred. In the meantime, SGL put out this statement.

"We are deeply saddened to report that Michael Tolman, 56, of the Orlando area died this morning … (He) suffered critical injuries when he was struck by reinforcing steel," the company stated. "Our focus right now is on the family and friends of Mr. Tolman, as well as on the investigation of the accident."

That statement went on to say that work across the entire 21-mile stretch of the jobsite has been temporarily suspended.

No word yet on when work will resume.
