A seaplane tipped over Wednesday in Lake Dora near Wooten Park in Tavares, police said.

  • Tavares bills itself as 'America's Seaplane City'
  • No one hurt; FAA called in to investigate

The plane was in the water, taxiing to take off when it made a U-turn. The front of the plane dipped under water, and it rolled over, investigators said.

Weather conditions were cool and windy, a day after severe thunderstorms rumbled across Central Florida. Whitecaps and choppy water could be seen on Lake Dora.

Neighbors said they see a lot of seaplanes come and go during the day.

"There’s a seaplane base down here, so he was going in to get gas or mechanical problems," said Dave Doner, who lives nearby. "He's OK, and that’s the bottom line with all of this."

Authorities say just the pilot was involved, and no one was injured.

The area is home to Tavares Seaplane Base and Marina, which hosts fly-ins. Tavares calls itself "America's Seaplane City."

The Federal Aviation Administration has been called in to investigate.
