Seminole County Public Schools could soon be handing over the keys to one of their buildings to the city of Sanford.

  • School building could become community center
  • Seminole County Public Schools owns the building, land
  • City leaders have discussed plans for a community center

The building is located in east Sanford at the corner of Mellonville Avenue and Celery Avenue, near the historic baseball stadium.

Mercedes Williams knows a lot about the area.  And she says she’s noticed some crime not far from where she lives – something she never wants to see her nieces and nephews get caught up into.

“There’s other activities that are going on,” said Williams.

Williams is excited to hear about plans for a building down the street from her home – a building that now sits empty.

Right now, Seminole County Public Schools owns the land and the building. But it’s in talks with the city to transfer ownership. City leaders have discussed the possibility of turning the building into a community center.

“And I think it’s a good opportunity for the kids because there’s a lot of kids,” said Williams.

Sanford city leaders haven’t made any final decisions on exactly what they’re going to do with this property.  But just the possibility of it becoming a community center gives Williams hope for her community.  She believes such a center could have a positive effect on the entire neighborhood.

“Because if that was to happen what else is there to do but just to learn and get an education,” said Williams. “And parents - that’s what they want for their kids - they want the best.”

Seminole County School officials say they’re still working out the final details of transferring ownership of the property to the city of Sanford.
