A brush fire that burned within yards of homes in the Wedgefield neighborhood of east Orange County has been 100 percent contained, says Florida Forest Service.

The fire was estimated to be about 40 acres, Orange County Fire Rescue said. The service is calling it the "Sabal fire." Fire rescue says about a dozen homes were evacuated, but residents should be able to return soon.

Firefighters say that they have been able to keep flames away from homes, though one camper was reportedly destroyed.

There are smoke and wildlife concerns across Central Florida along SR-528 moving into the weekend.

Sky 13 video showed fires scorching wooded areas adjacent to large rural homes. Tractors were on the scene plowing fire lines around the blaze to protect homes.

Several area residents who were away from their homes as the fire spread were kept from getting back to their homes because crews closed several roads so they can bring in fire trucks to battle the flames.

“They told me they had a truck on the way, and a guy is back there watching it (my home)," said Jason Allums, a resident. "I have faith in them. I’ve been out here 15 years and seen a lot of fires, and not one house has gone down yet.”

Firefighters have not confirmed a cause of the fire.
