  • Troopers said child attempted to cross the roadway
  • La'zisis Harris taken to hospital but died

The incident happened in the Pine Hills neighborhood around 5:45 p.m. Sunday on Silver Star Road near Dardanelle Drive.

Troopers said a 19-year-old woman was driving westbound when 8-year-old La'zisis Harris, who is also known by her family as 'Isis,' attempted to cross the roadway.

The front of the vehicle struck the child, who was not in a crosswalk, a crash report stated.

Isis was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where she died.

“The younger generation, they are texting and driving and not paying attention, so I’m going to say that stongly -- put it on speaker if you’re going to be talking on the phone,” said Josephine Long, Isis Harris’ grandmother.

“I lost my baby -- it hurts me," she added.

Nearby residents want drivers to be more cautious.

"I think that drivers need to be more aware of small children," said Delrita Salmon, who lives in the Pine Hills area and is a mother of two. "This is not the first time that someone got killed by a car here."

There is a growing memorial for Isis on Silver Star Road where she was hit by the car.

The driver remained at the scene, FHP said. She was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
