The incident happened at about 5:45 p.m. on Silver Star Road near Dardanelle Drive.

Troopers said a 19-year-old woman was driving westbound when 8-year-old La'zisis Harris attempted to cross the roadway.

The front of the vehicle struck the child, who was not in a crosswalk, a crash report stated.

The child was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where she died.

"I think that drivers need to be more aware of small children," said Delrita Salmon, who lives in the Pine Hills area and is a mother of two.

"This is not the first time that someone got killed by a car here," she said.

The driver remained at the scene, FHP said. She was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
